What are Fleas?

Fleas are the most common external parasite in dogs, causing intense itching, hair loss, and skin infections. They can also carry diseases like tapeworms, which can affect both pets and humans.

How Fleas Spread

Fleas thrive in warm, humid environments and complete their life cycle in about three weeks. Adult fleas live on pets, while eggs, larvae, and pupae reside in the environment, such as carpets and bedding.

Signs of Fleas in Dogs

Symptoms of flea infestations include frequent scratching, biting, or over-grooming, hair loss near the tail, and red bumps or skin infections. Fleas can also cause allergic reactions, leading to flea allergy dermatitis.

How to Treat Fleas

Flea treatment involves a combination of treating pets and their environment. Use flea preventatives consistently on all pets and treat home and outdoor areas with insecticides to break the flea life cycle. Multiple treatments may be required to fully eliminate the infestation.

Preventing Fleas

Year-round flea prevention is crucial. Regularly vacuuming, washing pets’ bedding, and maintaining your yard (by removing leaf piles and cutting the lawn) can help prevent infestations.
